Do Humans Have Any Soul Left?

I once heard of a book called the Soul of the Ape. What is our Soul, or an ape’s soul at that? Our soul is often sung about in songs but what is it? The Dictionary defines it as the spiritual part of ourselves and even goes as far as saying it is the moral part of humans. Well, if our soul is moral what part of us is a-moral? When do we stray from morality, away from our soul? Our souls must be very upset with us because we have become very a-moral. Morality is so far from most of our actions it feels nearly as if we have no soul left. What of humans without souls! We are just waikng immoral beings, surely not fit to be running this planet! Maybe we should hand the reigns over to the great apes, the care and sensitivity they have certainly outweighs us immoral deceitful beings.

The first thing you need to know is that the United States legal system is based on two things: actus reas and mens rae. Basically, this is the difference between action and intention. For example, when you get into a vehicle you are supposed to understand the danger in driving too fast. If you cause an accident it is difficult to argue that you did not “intend” to because your “actions” were reckless. In fact, this is the difference between murder and manslaughter. “Murder” implies the intention of killing while “manslaughter” involves reckless action that resulted in death.
Understanding this, it is much easier to look at the most common types of violations and understand why the might be processed the way they are. For example, Driving Under the Influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the most common charges you will find in any municipal criminal court. This is because drunk driving is dangerous and can result in manslaughter. Obviously, this is of great revenue to the courts, but it also takes its toll on society.
The second thing you need to understand is that some laws are called misdemeanors while others are called felonies. The way you can differentiate between these is based on jail time. Misdemeanors are crimes that can be punishable by up to one year in jail. Felonies, then, are punishable by much longer (including multiple life sentences).
